Hey everyone!

Here we have a new Custom Track Format that Council wants to bring to the community. Special thanks to Eon for coming up with majority of the format and others that have talked about something similar within the WL Discord Server.

The objective with this format is to please most participants based on the 5 criteria (derived from discussions about other formats) in the post here.

This format consists of each team drafting 20 tracks at the start of the season. This will be done in a snake format. If you don’t know what a snake format for drafting is, here is an example.

Also, you may be wondering, how will it work in divisions of 8 teams (2 conferences)? If this were to happen, you would draft between both conferences. That means it will be a draft among all 8 teams.

On top of drafting 20 tracks, each team will have 1 Global Protect. At the start of the season, each team gets to protect 1 track that cannot be banned by a team in the Global Ban Tracks. This happens once, and is at the start of the season after the draft phase.

As well, each team can have 2 Global Ban Tracks. At the start of the season, each team gets to ban 1-2 tracks that people may not use against them.

So the procedures, in order, for the start of the season will be:
Draft 20 tracks --> Global Protect 1 track --> Global Ban 2 tracks

Global bans apply to every matchup and take place at the start of the season, not before each match. For example, if I ban Final Grounds and my W1 opponent has it in their pool, the ban will mean something for that week. If my W2 opponent does not have Final Grounds in their pool, then my ban doesn't mean anything for that week. Protects are almost the exact same.

How each match will work:
Prior to each match, both teams will pick 4 tracks out of their 20 track pool to play from. Those 8 tracks will be playable for the match (Home team will choose their 4 first, then Away team -- Tentative, but that’s how we believe it should be.)
On top of this, 12 tracks will be randomized by a Council member and posted a week in advance.

Since there are global ban tracks for teams, we will also have an “insurance” section in the randomized tracklist in the case where tracks need to be swapped out.
You may be wondering, how many times are teams allowed to re-use tracks?
To answer that question, you may use any track as much as you want.

In the playoffs, both teams will be able to ban 1 track from the 4 picks before each match.

The Math
  • 4 picks per team
  • Home Team's 4 + Away Team's 4 = 8 tracks (2/3 GPs)
  • + 4 randomized tracks which fill in the rest of the war = 12 (3/3 GPs)
  • Each match will be determined by 66% of the teams tracks and 33% of randomized tracklist tracks.
If this format is not desirable, there are two other choices for you guys.
  1. The council can expand on Dermo’s idea he presented which sets out to hit the 5 criteria points:
    Dermo04/23/2019
What if instead of drafting every track for a teams picks, they draft about 5 tracks each at the start of the season so they might not get all the tracks that they want but it’s still their choice what they pick, this means when going against another team there’s 10 tracks but then you also add another 20 tracks that are randomized, then at the start of each week you protect 2 each and ban 5 each, this leaves 20 tracks, a portion of these are selected by each team and a portion are randomized, after week 5 the draft is done again and a team can’t pick the same tracks they did for the first half of the season

    Dermo04/23/2019
And we could do a thing with the draft where every team gets a certain amount of coins and they bid on tracks so you might get a track like mushroom island for 1 coin but then multiple teams might bid for final grounds

  2. You guys can suggest your own format, provided it meets the 5 criteria that was mentioned earlier.
You must be able to thoroughly and accurately present all facets of your format to council, as well as how your format meets each of the 5 criteria. The listed criteria are absolutely mandatory for creating a format that appeals to all parties so it cannot be ignored. This also means previous formats that the league has ran, once again, do not qualify as choices!
This thread will be open for discussion for a bit and then we will add a poll to it with Eon’s format (the main format being presented), Dermo’s format, and track the count for the amount of custom format submissions. The poll will also keep track of how many players want to redraft for playoffs and how many don't.

Dermo’s idea isn’t bad. The bans/protects have been fine in the past and the randomize lists + draft kind of sounds fun. I think it would really depend on what the division is per say. As these random lists and drafts may have a bigger effect in CT D3 where you have 1 or 2 good teams and they can abuse the draft, where as in CT D1 and D2 most teams are equal and have greater knowledge of the cts.

noone likes reading a 100 lines thread rather
It's an explanation thread, of course it's going to be somewhat long. Would you rather go in to the next season not knowing the specifics of the formats you're being allowed to pick from?

don't be surprised when noone replies though
How about people stop demanding a voice if they're not going to speak up when it actually matters.

Whatever, the form is working at least.

218 track with bans/protects
Or bigger track pool with last season bans and stuff
This is Eon's format being explained in the thread, simplified:

Season Start
20 track snake draft from 215 available tracks
Global Protect 1 track
Global Ban X amount of tracks

Each Week
4 picks from 20 track pool - Home Team
4 picks from 20 track pool - Away Team
Randomized track list each week fills in last 4

There's 20 tracks to pick from in a drafted pool, for each team, limit of 4 for each (8 tracks, 2/3 GPs).
There's a number of randomized tracks to fill in the last 4 of the war (12 tracks, 3/3 GPs).

There's more choice than with previous formats and pools are bigger than with randomized list formats from Seasons 14 and 15.

Ok thanks for explaining now I understand

Poll added!

After 30 responses on the form, winning numbers/rules:
  • 2 Global Bans (13 votes, 43.3%)
  • 12 Randomized Tracks (10 votes, 33.3%)
  • Repicks for W1 and W8 (16 votes, 53.3%)
  • No additional snake draft for playoffs is 56.7% between both "no snake draft" choices, drafting again is 43.3%. Between the two choices though, 1 ban each won by 3.4%.
That is what Eon's format will consist of if you vote for it in the poll^
